Brief Introduction to School of Chemical Engineering, Sichuan University

In this beautiful “land of abundance”, not far away from the snow-capped Minshan Mountain and elegant Emei Mountain, beside the Jin River, sits the famous century-old Sichuan  University which has been the birthplace for generations of social elites and celebrities.

A national key university positioned by the state in westChinaand directly under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, Sichuan University is a high-level research-oriented comprehensive university in the priority list of the “985 Project” and “211 Project” of the nation. Located in Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan, a famous historical and cultural city of China, Sichuan University is made up of three campuses ,i.e., Wangjiang, Huaxi and Jiang’an, which occupy a total area of 1,137 hectare (7,050 mu), including 2,540,000 square meters of floor space for teaching buildings and dormitories. Exuberant trees, colorful and fragrant flowers and numerous green lawns constitute an ideal environment for study and academic research.

One of the traditional and competitive schools and colleges of Sichuan University, School of Chemical   Engineering was founded in 1952 with the name “Sichuan Institute of Chemical Industry”. It came from the integration of the departments of ten institutions, i.e., Sichuan University, Chongqing University, West China University of Medical Science, Southwest Industrial Institute, Chonghua Institute, Southwest Institute of Agriculture, Leshan Technical Institute, Northern Sichuan University, Southwest Industrial Institute and Xichang Technical Institute. It also belonged toChina’s first batch of institutions of higher education famous for chemical engineering. The leading academic figures at that period included domestic chemical engineering education vanguards, such as Prof. HongyuanZhang, Prof. QuanZhang and Prof. XiXu. Successively, the School has undergone the development stages of Sichuan Institute of Chemical Engineering, Chengdu Institute of Technology, Chengdu University of Science and Technology, School of Chemical Science and Engineering of Sichuan Union University and current School of Chemical Engineering of Sichuan University. There are 7 entities under the current School, which are the Department of Chemical Engineering, the Department of Process Equipment and Safety Engineering, National Basic Course Teaching Base for Chemical Engineering, the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biological Engineering, the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, the Chemical Engineering Design Institute and the Teaching  Center for Engineering Experiments. In over 60 years, the School has made significant contribution to the education of the nation’s scientific and technological talents, scientific and technological progresses in chemical engineering and development of chemical industry, whereby it has become one of the most competitive schools of chemical engineering in the country with the greatest comprehensive strength.

By following the educational philosophy proposed by Prof. HongyuanZhang, that is, “Basic Education and Study, Industrial Orientation, and Social Service”, the School has maintained strong academic atmosphere and developed sound school-running system. Currently, the School has national key discipline of chemical engineering, level-1 doctoral certificate program for “Chemical Engineering and Technology”, center for post-doctoral studies encompassing 9 doctoral certificate programs, and 11 graduate certificate programs, 6 engineering fields for graduate programs and 6 undergraduate specialties. In 2016, the number of registered students of the School reads 2,732, including 1,655 undergraduates, 677 graduate and doctoral students and nearly 400 engineering graduate students.
